RACING NEWS

By Sentinel Dearo has been showing improvement in her track work. Seven furllongs may be a bit too far for her, but she is an outside possibility. Maharajah ran third to Gamble and Voltaire over a mile and a-quarter at Riccarton and should help to make the Clarendon Handicap an interesting race.

Sister Sal displayed good form last season up to a mile and a-quarter. She won the Gore Handicap in 2min 5 2-ssec, and also displayed smart form over six furlongs by winning at Wyndham in lmin 12 2-ssec.

Te Monanui was a high-class performer on. the turf, but in spite of a fine conformation he failed to produce anything within range of his own class. Albino has helped to revive the memory of his sire. Joygiver has apparently trained on since he ran at the Ashburton spring meeting as he shaped well in a gallop on Thursday with Sal’s Pal and Sister Sal. Reports from Riccarton stated that Joygiver had been suffering from kidney trouble, but apparently it was only of a. temporary nature. When racing as a three-year-old Alpine showed up as a possible stayer. He won the Novice Handicap at the June meeting at Wingatui, and on the same day in the General MacArthur Hack Handicap, of 10$ furlongs, lost a place, or, in fact, a good chance of a win by travelling wide at the home turn. . ■ >-.i«r ■-• A Safe Light won so well in the Otago Hunt Club Steeples that he should again run a good race in the Taieri Steeples. He bears an improved appearance since last season, as he looks bigger and stronger in condition. He was produced in 1934 and was got by Rosenor from Mainligtt, by PaladinSpotlight, by Nassau —Stardancer,' .by Martian.

Bonny Flight has come into favour for the Dunedin Guineas as a result of her win in the President’s Handicap and her gallop with High Play 6nd Royal Chorus, in which she was shaken up at the finish of five furlongs and made a good response, as she did to win the President’s Handicap, On two-year-old form Joygiver would be preferred to Bonny Flight over a mile, but reports about his interrupted preparation may find him short of a gallop or two. Mr B. N. Sandilands, stipendiary stevyard, has been granted permission to appeal to the Wanganui District Committee against the decision of the Foxton Racing Club’s Judicial Committee in exonerating A. G. Waddell for his part in the interference which took place between Dileas, ridden by Waddell, and Leybourne, ridden by K. Chote, nearing the • finish of the Wharangi Handicap at the Foxton meeting at Awapuni on September 23. Chote was suspended for six months and the judicial stewards took no action against Waddell. Trueway, who is engaged in the Clarendon Handicap,, is a four-year-old brother to Serenata and Representative. He was unplaced in his first two starts this season and in his next was a close fourth to Night Robe, Vafort, and Lyndon Lea at Ashburton over a mile. Vafort appeared to be unlucky to miss a win. In the Clarendon Handicap Vafort meets Trueway on 121 b better terms as a result of the latter's win at Geraldine, where Vafort did not start. On paper, Vafort should beat Night Robe and Trueway, but the field at Wingatui is stronger than at the Ashburton and Geraldine meetings. The McLean Stakes will introduce one of the most attractive fields ever secured for a two-year-old race in New Zealand. The field is composed of a rare muster of well-bred and good-looking youngsters who possess every qualification to make racehorses. At this stage of the season some of the youngsters present a more forward appearance in condition than others, and the result of the McLean Stakes will not settle the two-year-old supremacy, although it should give some indication in that direction. The race will provide a test of early speed and stamina, and may introduce some potential champions of the future. Air Ace, who will probably be a well-backed chance in the Dunedin Guineas, if not the actual favourite, started three times as a two-year-old. In his first appearance he finished fourth to Blue Bonny, Joygiver, and. Intense in the Spring Nursery Handicap run at Riccarton. He was unplaced in the. Dunedin Champagne Stakes, won by Joygiver, in which Piccolo and Bonny Flight were also out.side the money. Air Ace trained on, and at the Christchurch Hunt meeting scored an easy win in a division of the Maiden Stakes. Air Ace scored another easy win in the Cashmere Plate, and Piccolo was lucky to beat him in the John Grigg Stakes, run in lmin 26 2-ssec. Joygiver 7.4 ran a poor race in the Ashburton Spnng Handicap, being apparently short of work. Pensacola was fourth in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton, second to Bridge Acre in the Pioneer Handicap, won the Irwell Handicap in lmin 1 2-ssec, v/as third to Colais and Bridge Acre in the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, and a close third to Bridge Acre and John o’ Xjondou in the Challenge Stakes, run in lmin 26 2-ssec. At the Grand National meeting he showed a lot of pace in the Woolston Hack Handicap and scored a very easy win at Ashb'”-tn-> in lmin 13 l-ssec. On two-year-old form Joygiver, Pensacola, and Piccolo should fill the places in the Dunedin Guineas. Presant condition is, however, the most important factor, and the favourites mav be Air Ace. Pensacola. Bonny Flight, and Joygiver.
