THE VICTORY LOAN

Sir,—Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday night on the outcome of the Victory Loan, the Prime Minister said that when the result was received by the fighting forces overseas they would be greatly heartened, and would rejoice in the achievement. It has surely come to a queer pass when the morale of our fighting men can be affected by the success or otherwise of a Government loan, or by the state of mind of the Minister of Finance. In all the unnecessary sob stuff that was broadcast during the raising of the Victory Loan, the point was emphasised that, should the loan fail, our men on the battlefield would suffer through lack of munitions, etc. Surely, Sir, no matter what the state of the Treasury, our soldiers, especially those on the battlefield.' come first, and even if the people of New Zealand had to go short because of some unnecessary Government extravagance, our brave soldiers would lack nothing. The truth of the matter is that, despite the enormous amount of money paid.by the people in taxation, the Government wanted more, and the Minister of Finance was determined to get it.—l am, etc.. New Zealander.
