FIJIAN’S BRAVERY

There had been many examples of bravery among the Fijians, said Mr J. G. C. Wales, formerly brigadier, officer commanding the Fiji Military Forces, speaking at the Auckland Rotary Club luncheon a few days ago, but the action of one corporal had been outstanding. The tribe to which this n.c.o. belonged had made a vow never to leave behind any wounded, because they feared what the Japanese might do to them. The corporal had- carried in two wounded men and then had been badly wounded himself. Being covered by two enemy machine-guns, he had called to his men not to come out for him. They had insisted-on honouring their vow, and so the corporal had raised himself on his two hands and had taken a machine-gun burst across his chest.
