OBITUARY

MR JOHN DUNLOP

Mr John Dunlop, who had over 43 years of service with the Union Steam Ship Company, died at his residence in Wellington last week. Mr Dunlop was born at Dumbarton, Scotland, in 1871, and gained his first engineering experience with the wellknown firm of Denny Brothers in that town. He joined the service of the Union Company in 1893, coming to New Zealand as third engineer of the Taien. At the age of 25 he obtained his first class Beard of Trade certificate in Sydney, and in 1901 he returned to the United Kingdom, coming back to New Zealand as chief engineer of the Waipori. After service in charge of the engine-rooms of the Aparima, Pukaki, Matai, Tarawera, and Waikare he went again to the United Kingdom in 1912 to stand by the-Niagara, then building, and returned with her to New Zealand. . . In 1914 Mr Dunlop was again in the United Kingdom in connection with the building of the Avenger, which was taken over by the Admiralty for service with the navy. With the rank of Commander (E), R.N.R., Mr Dunlop remained with the- Avenger until she was torpedoed in the North Sea on June 16, 1917. He then returned to New Zealand and joined the trodpship Maunganui. Mr Dunlop was responsible for the conversion of the Tahiti, Makura, Maori, and Wahine to oil fuel. After further service with the Union Company as superintending engineer at Port Chalmers and Wellington he retired in December. 1936.
