MOSQUITO RAIDS
TARGETS IN WEST GERMANY LONDON, Oct. 4. An Air Ministry communique states that a force of Bomber Command Mosquitoes last night, without loss, attacked Kassel and other objectives in Western Germany. Second Tactical Air Force Mosquitoes, ranging over Germany and Holland, last night attacked 31 trains, 20 barges, and 25 motor vehicles. Many of the trains were directly hit by bombs, and all were attacked by cannon fire. A large number of goods trucks were set on fire. A total of 116 trains have been attacked in Germany and Holland on three consecutive nights. ‘ Mosquito night-fighters, operating under the direction of a ground controller based on the Continent, destroyed four Junkers and 87 Stuka dive-bombers which attacked Allied forces on the German-Dutch frontier on Monday*might. A New Zealander, Flying Officer J. R. Gardiner, of Nelson, destroyed one of the four Junkers. The synthetic oil section of the large Farben chemical plant at Ludwigshaven has been knocked out of production temporarily by United States heavy bomber attacks. Reconnaissance photographs reveal no sign of activity. The great Henschel works at Kassel, producing locomotives and tanks, also suffered considerable damage.
