THIRD GRADE MATCH

OTAGO BEATS NORTH OTAGO (Special) OAMARU, Aug. 27. In a match that was always interesting, the Otago Third Grade representatives beat the North Otago Junior representatives by 8 points to nil at the Show Grounds yesterday. Territorial advantage for the greater part of the game rested with the home side, but the visitors were quick to make use of mistakes and turn defence into attack. There was an excellent attendance at the Show Grounds, and the North Otago Highland Pipe Band was in attendance. Playing with the advantage of a strong wind, but against a bright sun, North Otago early went to the attack, but illdirected passes and faulty handling nullified their efforts. The visitors, however, soon settled down to play vigorous football, but they, too, failed to put the finishing touches to rushes. Otago was attacking strongly when half time came with no score.

In the second half the North Otago hookers continued to win the ball from most of the set scrums. After play had been in progress for some time the Otago forwards took charge, and from a passing rush Judge ran around the defence to score near the corner. Penson converted, and shortly afterwards he kicked a goal from a penalty. The home side rallied strongly, but failed to retrieve the position, and the final whistle went with the scores:—Otago. 8 points: North Otago, nil. Mr J. Macmillan was the referee. In the Third Grade curtain-raiser Athletic 9 beat Excelsior 6 Mr J. May was the referee.
