HOME AGAIN

PACIFIC DRAFT RETURNS LARGE CROWD AT STATION More than 1000 people waited at the Dunedin Railway Station on Saturday afternoon to greet the draft of men who have returned from the Pacific area to enter essential industries. All the men appeared fit and well, and were obviously delighted to be home again. About 50 left the train at Dunedin. and approximately 70 proceeded to stations further south. Adequate arrangements were made to receive the men at the station and to enable them to get to their homes as quickly as possible. Special enclosures were roped off for next-of-kin, and, after the reunions had taken place, the men and their relatives were driven to their destinations by members of the E.P.S. transport sectipn. Tea was provided by the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council for the troops travelling south, and was served by members of the Mayoress’s Committee. Among those who greeted the draft on the station were the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron), the Mayor of St. Kilda (Mr N. D. Anderson), the Mayor of West Harbour (Mr E. J. Taylor), the Mayor of Green Island (Mr J. Boomer), the area commander (Colonel S. M Satterthwaite), the area staff officer (Major V. A. Norrish), the Rev. W. G Slade (representing the Otago branch of the National Council of Churches), and representatives of the R.S.A., the Patriotic Council, and other organisations.
