AWARDED GEORGE CROSS

PRIVATE SACRIFICES LIFE LONDON, June 13. The George Cross has been posthumously awarded to Private Joseph Silk, of the Somerset Light Infantry. He was with a platoon in the jungle when a grenade in his possession ignited. He shouted: “Look out!” and polled over, clutching the grenade to his stomach, thus shielding his companions with his body. Private Silk was killed instantly by the explosion, but the others were saved.
