MEN FROM PACIFIC
LARGE DRAFT ARRIVES DIRECTION INTO INDUSTRY A draft of 260 men from forward areas in the Pacific, who have returned to New Zealand for direction into essential industry, arrived in Dunedin at 7 o’clock yesterday morning. Fifty of the men left the train at Dunedin, and the other 210 continued to stations further south. All the men in the draft have been granted 28 days’ leave, at the conclusion of which they must report for direction by the manpower officer. Several hundred people had assembled at the Railway Station to greet the returning soldiers. No formal ceremony was held, but representatives of various organisations were present. Among those who met the draft were the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron), the Mayor of St. Kilda (Mr N. D. Anderson), the area commander (Colonel S. M. Satterthwaite), and the area staff officer (Major V. A. Norrish). The Otago Patriotic Council, which had erected signs of welcome at the station, provided refreshments for the men in the draft who were proceeding to southern destinations, and assistance in this connection was given by the Y.M.C.A. Optimists’ Club.
