CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday. It was reported that plans and specifications had been received from the South Australian Housing Trust, and a discussion on them by the Special Housing Committee of the chamber and invited representatives was arranged. The secretary reported that an Inquiry had been received from Vancouver with regard to the export of Oamaru stone to America. “The inquirer is of the opinion,” the letter stated, “that large quantities of this material could be sold in the State of California, as houses could be constructed which would be practically earthquake proof. There would also be no trouble with termites—an insect that takes great pleasure in boring holes in anything of wood construction. Even hardwood floors are not exempt from their operations. From his previous experience with this stone the inquirer knows it would be ‘a winner,’ as he has had it in buildings in California for over 35 years and they are as good to-day as when he finished them.”—The secretary said he had communicated with the Oamaru Chamber in the matter. In regard to the Sawyers’ Bay-Wai-tati tunnel proposal, replies were received from various members of Parliament in Otago and Southland offering their help. After a discussion on the matter of petrol conservation, the following resolution was passed: " That in the present review of all petrol licences the allocations shoud be made as equitable as possible right throughout New Zealand.”
It was decided to arrange for a church service for all members at First Church. It was unanimously decided that it was necessary, in the interests of the chamber of commerce movement, to have closer liaison with the Invercargill and Oamaru Chambers of Commerce, and it was left to the president and vice-president tc\ make the necessary arrangements for the opening of discussions with these bodies.
