ATHENS OR ROME?
Sir, —The contention of " M ’’ that Europe received its civilisation from Rome is beside the point. As " Civis ’’ has shown. Grecian civilisation is older than Roman, as any schoolboy should know, but what has that to do with eternity? Since matter is indestructible! Rome is no more eternal than any other city,— I am, etc., D.
Sir.—l read with much interest the no.e by " Civis ” on the above subject, and the letter by " M ” in to-day’s Daily Times puzzles me. Dash it all, he is surely not suggesting that we are either civilised or Christian! I know you have some queer correspondents, but don't you think that such a suggestion is going a bit too far?— I am, etc., Didymus. June. 14.
