THE FISHING TRAGEDY
Sir,—l would be obliged by the publication of an inquiry on the subject of the drowning of the two Port Chalmers fishermen on Ninety Mile Beach last week The air force having been invited to search for the missing boat duly sighted it and reported the fact 48 hours before it was swamped in the surf. Why was a rescue boat not sent to pick up these iflen immediately the news was broadcast that the boat had been sighted? Both the Otago and Lyttelton Harbour Boards have powerful tugs which were quite capable of going to the rescue. Why was the air force called upon to search for the boat if no public body was willing to send its ships out to pick the men up? I consider the air force time and fuel were wasted for nothing—l am, etc., Pt. Chalmers, June 12. Fisherman.
