MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council, held last evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. P, Hai'tstonge) and Cl's J. S. Blackie, T. L. Gibson, A. Souter, W. P. Dyer, and J. F. McCartney. The East Taieri Cemetery Trustees applied for a grant of £ls. The secretary of the trust (Mr J. A. Borrie) appeared in support of the application, and gave details of the receipts and expenditure in the last few years. He said that, owing to many increased costs, it was difficult to carry on with the present income.— The council decided to grant the request for this year, the position to be reviewed next year. It was explained that a similar application was being made to the Taieri County Council so that a debit balance at the bank could be wiped out. Correspondence The National Council for the Reclamation of Waste Material acknowledged receipt of 3cwt of rags collected. The letter stated that the weight sent reflected the highest credit on all concerned.—Received. The Otago Hospital Board wrote concerning the levy for the current year, it stated that, pending approval of the estimates, a levy was being made on the same basis as last year, and this would be adjusted later on if necessary.—Noted. Mr J. W. Shilcock complained of the state of the footpath in Bruce street.— Temporary repairs to be carried out as soon as possible. A letter was read from the Rev. S. C. Read (overseas) regarding photographs of a Taieri reunion held in Cairo. It had been reported that mails had been lost, and if the photographs had not reached the council he could supply another set. He had received the council’s greetings, and had had pleasure in passing them on to many men from Mosgiel and Taieri whom he had met.—Noted. General "The chairman of the Works Committee stated that the pump in die borough yard had to be run from 12 to 14 hours daily until repairs had been effected to the pipeline, which was damaged in a recent flood.

It was decided to reply to*an inquiry from the district rehabilitation officer stating that the council would find permanent employment for two ex-service-men on the council’s staff.

Members decided to make a tour of inspection of the borough in the near future.

The clerk reported that since the last meeting building permits to the value of £2195 had been issued.

The Taieri Competitions Festival Committee was granted the use of the Coronation Hall for the demonstration concert on October 4.

The chairman of the General Committee reported that representations were being made to the proper authorities regarding improvements in the time table of the railway and bus services beween Mosgiel and Dunedin, and also regarding the fares charged on the buses. A sub-committee was appointed to make inquiries regarding a supply of gravel, and to arrange for the gravelling of the streets in the borough. A request that the ditch in Forth street be filled in Was received, and it was decided that this work should be done as soon as possible
