PREFABRICATED HOUSE
EXPERIMENTAL TENANTS LONDON, May 27.
The proposed temporary prefabricated steel house, known as the Churchill house, which has been the subject of a great deal of criticism, is now called the Portal house; after Lord Portal, Minister for Works, whose Min. istry would be responsible for its construction.
It is now stated that a married couple will spend three weeks in the specimen house to test its “livability.” The Ministries of Works and of Health, who are jointly responsible for these post-war homes, have already made many changes based on criticism and suggestions from hundreds of men and women who have seen the specimen house. These include higher ceilings, a back door, improved hot water circulation, and a bigger bathroom. A soldier and his wife will probably be chosen for experimental tenants.
