SICK AND WOUNDED
DRAFT FROM MIDDLE EAST ARRIVAL OF OTAGO MEN A special hospital train carrying about 70 officers and men who have been invalided home from the Middle East arrived in Dunedin last night. Most of the soldiers had been wounded in battle, and the draft included 10 cases who were taken to hospital by ambulance. Approximately half the men on the train were frorji the local military area, the remainder being from the Southland district. There was a crowd of several hundred people on the station when the train arrived shortly before 8.30, and the men were given a rousing reception. No official ceremony was held, but amongst those who waited on the platform to greet the draft were the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron), the Mayor of St. Kilda (Mr N. D. Anderson), the Mayoress of Alexandra (Mrs A. McKellar), Mr Charles V. Smith (chairman of the Joint Council of St. John and the Red Cross Society), Colonel S. M. Satterthwaite (area commander). Major V. A. Norrish (area staff officer), Captain H. J. Moynihan (officer in charge of sick and wounded), and representatives of the Returned Servicss’ Association and other organisations. After the reunion with their families and friends, the men were driven to their homes by the transport section of the Red Cross Society, which also arranged meals and entertainment for the remainder of the party who stayed in Dunedin overnight.
