The Otago Daily Times Wednesday, April 19, 1944. THE PATRIOTIC FUND

We publish this morning a first list of subscriptions to the fund that is being raised this year by the Dun-edin-St. Kilda Sub-zone Committee operating as a unit of the C’tago Provincial Patriotic Council. Already a sum of between £II,OOO and £12,000 has been .raised, and it is to be noted that in nearly every instance the subscription corresponds with that provided by the donor last year, when the sub-zone quota was substantially greater than it is on this occasion. It is, however, the aim of the committee to secure, by direct subscription, the amount at which it aims and thus to dispense with other methods that were the means last year of bringing in considerable sums of money. If the example of those who have already subscribed is followed by other companies, firms, and individuals whose names have yet to be added to the list of subscribers, there seem to be reasonable grounds for the hope that the objective of the committee may be attained in the way that commends itself to it. A consideration that should influence the whole community at the present time to make a generous response to the committee’s appeal' exists in the knowledge of the heavy sacrifices which have been made by the armed forces of the Dominion in the interests of the Empire and of their own people and in the additional knowledge that at this very hour the Allied nations are completing their preparations for the greatest military adventure in all history—an adventure that must be expected to be as costly in human life as it will be daring. When the fit and strong of our land and of the lands with which we are associated in the battle for freedom and for the preservation of civilisation are placing their personal existence at stake, those in enjoyment of security and comfort at home can most fittingly show their gratitude to them by contributing to the extent of their ability to funds that are to be expended for the benefit of the men and women of New Zealand who are engaged on war service.
