THE MARSHALLS INVASION

“ONLY. THE BEGINNING” SYDNEY. Feb. 11. America did not expose her full hand in the Marshall Islands invasion. This statement was made by the United States Under-secretary of the Navy, Mr James Forestal, to South-west Pacific war correspondents at General MacArthur’s headquarters. Mr Forestal accompanied the American task force which carried out the Marshalls operation. The naval armada used was reported to be one of the largest in the world’s history’. Mr Forestal added that the Marshalls offensive was the beginning, but only part of the integrated pressure which would be necessary finally to defeat the Japanese. Its success, however. pointed to a solution of a difficult military problem. This was reflected in two things—the meticulous process of planning that went into it, and the power of complete co-ordina-tion between naval, air. and ground forces.
