THE BENGAL FAMINE
DEATHS 700,000 OVER NORMAL YEAR LONDON, Feb. 10. The number of deaths in Bengal in 1943 was between 600,000 and 700,000 in excess of normal years, states the Calcutta correspondent of the Exchange Telegraph. This was revealed by Bengal’s Moslem Minister ■ for Health in the Legislative Council. The correspondent says that the Minister’s statement indicates the toll of famine in 1943, but emphasises that disease is still rampart in some districts, and the rise in mortality is causing alarm.
