RETENTION OF ARTICLES ILLEGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 10. The Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones, intimated to-day that it was incorrect to suppose that Home Guardsmen could retain their military overcoats upon payment of 395. They wsre required to hand in all articles of uniform and equipment on issue to them with the exception of socks and boots, and the retention of any other article of uniform was illegal. Where articles had been lost H4me Guardsmen and soldiers Were required to pay for the deficiencies, the Minister added. Such articles remained Government property, and if subsequently found the Home Guardsman or soldier was required to return them to his unit, and a refund of the value (fair wear being allowed for) was qtade.
