BURNSIDE MARKET

GOOD SALE OF FAT STOCK HIGHER VALUES ALL ROUND At the Burnside market yesterday, owing to a shortage In numbers, there was a decided increase In the prices of all classes of fat stock. Cattle were forward in smaller numbers, with the result that prices were better by 50s to 80s a head. The yarding of fat sheep was made up mostly of ewes of poor quality, and with a shortage of supply for the trade there was a keen sale throughout. The yarding of fat lambs was smaller than usual, and prices also showed an advance on last week. The display of baconers did not compare with last week’s entry but prices generally were better by 6s to 7s a head. The store cattle entry consisted of two pens of steers and a few pens of cows. Fat Cattle.— I The entry of fat cattle numbered 200, made up mostly of medium and light descriptions, with only a few pens of choice quality. Owing to the Shortage of numbers there was a keen sale throughout for .all classes of ox, values being better by 50s to 60s a head on last week’s rate. Cows did not show the same appreciation, but there was an improvement on the average of £1 a head. Fat Sheep—There was a drop in the entry of fat sheep as compared with last week, 1160 being offered. Ewes again comprised the bulk of the yarding, and were mostly medium and poor quality, with practically no pens of any attractive sheep. The wethers were again in short number, and comprised mainly lightweight and ordinary sorts. With the short supplv for the trade there was a decided increase in values for anything showing quality. The increase in values could be quoted on the average 3s to 5s a head, while poor sorts remained at last week’s value. Quotations: Prime heavy wethers, to 365; prime, 31s to 33s 6d; medium, 26s Gd to 28s; light, from 24s 6d; prime ewes, 25s to 28s; medium, 20s to 235; light, from 30s Fat Lambs.—The entry of fat lambs numbered 1150, being mostly made up of freezing quality, with a fair proportion of medium and light sorts. The best quality lambs met with keen competition from the trade, and were fully better than schedule rates. The sale generally could be quoted Is to 2s a head better than last week. Quotations: Extra quality, to 365; prime, 27s to 31s; medium, 24s to 25s Gd; light, from 225. Pi ffs _The entry of baconers did not com Dare with last week’s entry in either quality or numbers. All classes were keenly competed for, and the sale showed an improvement of 5s to 7s a head ahead of last week. The entry of store pigs was an average one, but the competition was poor, and in many cases it was difficult to find buyers. The drop in values was attributable to a large extent to the shortage of pig foods. Best weaners realised from 14s to 16s, and medium, 10s to 13s. Quotations Best baconers, £7 to £7 14s; prime, £6 to £6 15s, medium, £4 18s to £5 9s; light, from £ |tore Cattle.—The entry of store cattle was about on a par with that of last week there being only two pens of steers and a few odd pens of cows. The entrv of vealers was about the same as that' of a week ago. and prices were unchanged.
