NO EARLY VICTORY

MR CURTIN'S WARNING WAR SITUATION REVIEWED (Rec. 0.15 a.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 0. “While we can be hopeful for the future we cannot count upon an early or easy victory,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, when reviewing the war situation in the House of Representatives to-night. “In spite of favourable war developments there is yet no reason to believe that Germany will be defeated without launching an invasion from the west. The enemy has had a long time in which to prepare his defences against such an invasion, and experience has shown that a front of this kind cannot be opened without severe sacrifices of men and material. “It seems clear that the climax of the war in Europe will be reached this year,” Mr Curtin added. “ but when Germany is defeated it will still take some time to mount an overpowering offensive against Japan.”
