Mr W. D. Wallace, who has been registrar of the Supreme Court in Christchurch since 1928, has rteired.

Mr George Romans, of Arrowtown, yesterday celebrated his 101st birthday. Friends in Dunedin toasted his health and later conveyed greetings to him by telephone. Mr H. R. Minn, formerly of the Classics Department at the University of Otago, will leave this morning to take up a teaching appointment in Sydney. Mrs Arthur Gill, of 158 Highgate, has received advice that her son, Pat Gill, of the Fleet Air Arm, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Sir William Goodman, chief engineer and general manager of the Adelaide Tramways Trust, is expected to arrive in Dunedin within the next day or two to make the engineering survey of the transport system, which he was recently appointed by the City Council to undertake.

After being a flight commander for seven months, Squadron Leader D. M. Brass, of Wellington, has been promoted to command a squadron, with the rank of wing commander. He has flown more than 1500 hours, of which 500 have been on operations. His squadron has had several successes against U-boats. He was educated at the Southland Boys’ High School. At a special meeting of the committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club yesterday, the president, Mr B. S. Irwin, referred to the death of Mr A. C. Hanlon, KC. He said that Mj Hanlon’s death was a great loss to the community, including those associated with racing and trotting. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr Ballantyne for Christchurch, Mr J. H. Edmonds, Mr and Mrs R. J. Vickers, Mr D. Richardson, Mr F. Ford, Mr H. J. Luff, and Mr J. Maxwell for Wellington, Mr A. Hewitt and Mr R. J. Penniket for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr and Mrs E. Parkin and Mrs A. Cumming from Auckland, Mrs and Miss Barnes, Mr F. Allen, Mr W. Booth, Mrs Duncan, Miss Duncan, and Dr M. Falconer from Wellington.
