RANGE OF PRICES

The following quotations per 1001 b for beef and per lb for mutton and pigs, are supplied, with a comparison with last week’s prices, by our special representative at ytaieiday’s Burnside stock sale:—

Fat Sheep.—The entry totalled approximately 2220. There were more wethers forward than for some time past, but anything in the way of competition for them was ■ confined to the best sheep, the bulk of the yarding being mostly medium and ordinary sorts. Ewes were again forward in large numbers, with a limited number of good sorts, the greater portion being medium and ordinary. The sale for ewes at the opening was 2s to 3s below last week’s values, but wethers were firm Towards the finish, however, there was'a collapse in the market, and passings were numerous. Quotations: Prime wethers, 31s 6d to 34s 3d; medium, 26s to 28s: light, from 22s 6d; prime young ewes, to 31s; prime, 25s to 275; medium, 90c to 23s- light, from 13s. 2 °Kat Lambs.— The entry was 2000, cornnared with 1200 last week. There was a decided improvement in the quality, there being a' number of pens of betterclass, particularly from Central Otago. Trade and export buyers operated freely for best quality, while medium and lighter sorts were bought principally by the export trade. Quotations: Extra quality, to 31s- prime, 26s to 28s 6d; medium, 23s to 24s’ 6d; light, from 21s. ' Pigs. —There was a small entry ox baconers. including a number of pens of well-finished sorts. The sale opened with a race of light sorts, regarding which there was a doubt about the weights, and it did not receive much attention. When the good quality baconers came under the hammer, however, there was keen competition, the prices secured being the highest at Burnside for some time. Best baconers realised up to £8 10s; prime, £6 to £6 15s; medium, £5 to £5 9s; ana light from £4 7s. There was a small entry of store pigs, with good competition for all classes. Best weaners realised from 26s 6d to 28s 6d, and smaller , descriptions from 21s. Store Cattle.—The entry was an average one, and comprised only an odd pen or two of good soils. Buyers were scarce, and the sale lacked animatibn. Prices generally were easier by 20s to 30s on last week’s- values, a number of pens being passed at auction. The long spcli of dry weather had an effect on the market. One pen of good three and four-year-old bullocks made £l2 9s; two and a-half to three-year-old, £8 15s to £9 10s; and 18 months old from £5 16s. There was a large yarding of vealers, which was rather in excess of the trade's requirements, and prices for poorer sorts were decidedly easier. Best runners realised up to £lO 2s 6d; good quality vealers, £5 10s to £6 12s 6d; and medium, £3 17s 6d to £4 12s 6d. Dairy Cows.— I There was a fair entry in the dairy section, made up mostly of lowconditioned cows and others that have been in profit for some time. There was a good inquiry for cows close to profit, best sorts making up to £ls, and good class heifers to £l2 7s 6d. There was little inquiry for poorer sorts.
