THE RAKER BEATS SASCHA

KOHARA’S SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND The Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held in fine weather, and a large attendance witnessed some interesting races and close finishes. The attendance was not so large as on Dunedin Cup day, but the totalisator turnover showed an increase. The going was on the hard side, and some of the horses showed that recent racing had left its mark, but not to any serious extent. The D.J.C. Handicap provided an interesting race and a close finish. There was no pace on over the first half-mile, and this enabled Paladeo, who was slow away, to reach the front in the first quarter of a mile. Saseha was fairly well back in the early part of the race and appeared to be rather too confidently handled. She joined the leaders in the straight, but The Raker, to whom she gave a good stait in the final three furlongs, stalled off her challenge in a hard fought finish. Amorlad and Bascule did not run to the expectations of their supporters. Aurora Australis was made a strong favourite for the James Hazlett Gold Cup, and scored a comfortable win. She did not receive the opposition anticipated from Scottish Dale, who was slow away at the start and came round the field after being last into the straight. Aurora Australis scored a popular win and won with apparently so much in hand that additional success should come her way. Sister Sal was one of the most con-fidently-handled winners ever seen at Wingatui. Two exceptionally large dividends were paid during the day, the first by Grand Forest in the Novice Handicap. and the second by Kohara in the concluding event. Kohara’s backers on the win machine received a' return approaching the century mark. The totalisator handled £55,142. compared with £44,698 last year. The total for Dunedin Cup day this season and the concluding card on Saturday was £107,545 10s, compared with £88,396. The following were the results:— OWHIRO HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £3OO.
