VEGETABLES FOR ARMY

5000 ACRES IN NORTH ISLAND (Special) AUCKLAND Jan. 4. There are now 5000 acres under vegetable cultivation by the Government in the North Island. The gardens are situated in localities extending from Kaikohe in the north to Otaki in the south, and the work is under the supervision of Mr T. E. Rodda, of Hamilton. Rain is needed in most of the areas at present to promote the growth of vegetables, and should sufficient fall soon the crop is expected to aggregate 8000 tons during the next five or six weeks. The Department of Agriculture is growing the vegetables, and their disposal is entrusted to the Internal Marketing Department. Most of the vegetables are intended to feed the fighting services engaged in the Pacific war zone.
