DIVE-BOMBERS

FIRST DOMINION UNIT FLIGHT OVER AUCKLAND (Special) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. New Zealand’s first dive-bomber unit flew over the city yesterday morning in arrowhead formation. The bombers were of the Douglas Dauntless type. There were 18 machines in the actual formation, while another, which, appeared to be directing the flight, flew well to the left and slightly higher than the squadron itself, which was at approximately 4000 ft. The interest taken by the citizens of Auckland was intense. Every head in Queen street was turned skyward, in the suburbs people rushed outside at the first roar of the massed engines, while on tfie ferry boats passengers ran from side to side of the vessels in order to keep the dive-bombers in sight. This was the greatest number of machines in one formation that has yet flown over Auckland.
