DUNEDIN MILITARY AREA RETIREMENT OF COLONEL JEFFERY In accordance with the Army policy of using officers of the regular forces as they become available to replace officers of the New Zealand Temporary

Staff, Colonel S. M. Satterthwaite, New Zealand Staff Corps, will to-day assume the appointment of Area Commander, Area XI, Dunedin, in place of Colonel J. G. Jeffery, M.C., V.D., A.D.C., who has held the position since 1940, and is now returning to civil life. Colonel Satterthwaite served in the 1914-18 war with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and held the appointment of brigade intelligence officer. He was severely wounded near Bapaume in 1918, and invalided home to

New Zealand. He is well known in Dunedin, where he has previously held staff appointments, and was from 1926 to 1934 adjutant, Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment, before leaving to assume the appointment of commandant of the District Military School at Burnham. During the present war he served in the Middle East with the 2nd N.Z.E.F., and after holding regimental and staff appointments, was appointed to command the 26th Battalion, and was mentioned in despatches for distinguished service in the field. Last year he returned to New Zealand to assume the appointment of commandant of the New Zealand Tactical School, at Wanganui, and has now been promoted to the rank of colonel and appointed to Dunedin.

Born at the Whangarei Hospital, twin sons of Mr and Mrs G. W. Ringrose, of Otaikarangi, will celebrate their birthdays on different days. One boy was bom on December 16 and the other on December 18, both being perfectly normal and healthy. Cases of twins being born at such an interval are uncommon.
