NOTES FROM INVERCARGILL
(Special) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 6. Macedoine is to contest the Wellington Cud, and will be ridden by L. J. Ellis. The Salijiagundi mare came her race at Invercargill very well, and this morning she moved very freely over a round at strong three-quarter pace, coming home the last four furlongs comfortably, in 52sec. She will accompany her stable mate, Sascha, as far as Dunedin to-morrow, and will go on to Wellington on Tuesday in the care of her owner-trainer. R. E. McLellan. Sascha has thrived on her holiday racing, and she was keen to get into her work this morning when restricted to a round and a bit of half-pace. She will be ridden in the Jockey Club Handicap by W. F. Ellis, and will be hard to dispose of in her present form. Royal Chorus. Aurora Australis, Heidelberg, Invulnerable, and Nigger Lad were given pace work, and all are in good order for their engagements on Saturday. Aurora Australis has two engagements at Wingatui, but her mission will be the Hazlett Gold Cup, in which she will be ridden by W.F. Ellis, who has been associated with her in her last three wins. L. J. Ellis will ride Royal Chorus. The Invercargill l contingent for Wingatui will leave to-morrow.
Pocket Flash (T. J. Boyle) gave an excellent display of jumping over a round of the hurdles. W. F. Ellis’s mounts for Wingatui will include Sascha, Invulnerable, Aurora Australis, and Nigger Lad. Ellis has been engaged to ride Merry May in the Wellington Cup. K Wilson will ride Roseman and Old Glory, and T. J. Boyle will be on Pocket Flash. J. A. Rowland has written to the Dunedin Jockey Club asking for an explanation of the handicapping of Royal Brief in the Abbotsford Handicap (seven furlongs). In three seasons, ','t fairly extensive racing Royal" Brief'has won only two races, both six-furlong events, and yet he was handicapped at 8.12 in the Abbotsford Handicap, says Rowland. Royal Brief was unplaced in the Waikiwi Handicap (seven furlongs) at . Invercargill, but the Dunedin .handlqapjfer raised him 31b in the Abbotsford Handicap, while he dropped Carolyn, who finished fourth, 31b, and the unplaced horses Last Effort and True Mate 51b and lib respectively. Rowland wants to know why Royal Brief was not treated, in the same, way as the other unplaced::,horses, ’and why.: he was handicapped to'mjeet;Carolyn-on gib worse terms. As a protest .agalnsfeihe handicapping he scratched, all his/horses with the exception of Royal'Chorus for the Dunedin meeting
