Hilda Potts was got by Jack Potts— Ladv Gertrude, by Nelson Derby—Lady Irving, by Sir Williarn (son of Childe Harold) from a mare by Irvington A little over four furlongs from home in the Canterbury Handicap Joan Conquest’s wheel locked with one of Hardy Oak’s and the former broke up. First Royal, who won at Invercargill, is a six-year-old black gelding by Royal Silk from First Water, who is also the dam of Rocks Ahead. First Water was got by Harold Rothschild—Red Diamond, dv Prince Imperial. Gold Bar travels, too fast to last in some of his races, and apparently a method of controlling his speed and preventing him from running himself to a standstill cannot, be found. In the Canterbury Handicap Gold Bar paced his first half-mile in lmin 1 4-ssec, a mile in 2min 5 2-ssec, a mile and a-half in 3min 13sec, and two miles in ,4min 21 3-ssec. The early display of speed _left him without a finish.
