NEW MARKETING SCHEME
UNACCEPTABLE TO GROWERS (P.A.) NELSON, Jan. 5. While recognising that the new marketing scheme for this season’s ■ pip fruit crop was a genuine endeavour by the Government and the Stabilisation Commission to assist the industry, a meeting of Nelson growers by resolution expressed the opinion that the scheme was unworkable and not acceptable to the industry. It was decided to ask the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation to resume negotiations with the Government in an endeavour to secure a price based on the average cost of production. In view of the decision that the scheme was not acceptable, the growers decided to take no action in nominating growers for selection by the Minister of Marketing as members of the Advisory Committee and Fruit Marketing Council. A meeting of growers held at Motueka last night also passed a motion declaring the scheme unworkable and unacceptable, and requesting the directors of the federation to report to the Prime Minister on the unfavourable aspects of the scheme and to continue the efforts to secure a guaranteed price. This meeting also favoured tentative agreement with the Government’s suggestion for further producer control in marketing.
