BURNSIDE MARKET

SMALL CATTLE ENTRY SHARP DROP IN LAMB PRICES At the Burnside market yesterday there was a very small entry of cattle, approximately 100 being penned. This was no doubt due to the difference of opinion between tire graziers and the trade. Of the number entered, approximately 40 were sold at auction and the balance were supplied by a grazier for private sale at 54s per 1001 b for prime ox, other grades being correspondingly lower. Those sold at auction realised approximately the same price. Cows and heifers were better in value than last week to the extent of 20s to 30s a head. Fat sheep prices generally were equal to last week’s, with some of the medium classes a shade easier. Fat lambs were in over-supply,

and were decidedly easier. The market for baconers was a small one, and values remained at last week’s level. Fat Cattle. —The quality of the entry generally was only average. About 50 cattle were offered under the hammer, and prime ox sold at prices 10s to 20s a head better than last week, while cows could be quoted at 20s to 30s better. A truck of cattle sold on behalf of Messrs Dyer Bros., Mosgiel, made from £lB 17s 6d to £23 17s 6d, the latter being the top price for the day. Quotations: Prime bullocks, £2l 2s 6d to £23 17s 6d; medium, £lB 12s 6d to £l9 17s (id; light, from £l3 2s 6d; prime heifers, £l4 7s 6d to £ls 2s 6d; medium, £l2 12s 6d to £l3 12s 6d: light, from £8 12s 6d; prime cows, £l3 12s 6d to £l4 17s 6d; medium, £lO 12s Gd to £l3 2s 6d; light, from £7 2s 6d. Fat Sheep.—The yarding totalled approximately 1780, and was made up mostly of ewes. It was well up to the recent standard. Wethers were again limited in number. Included in the entry were a number of shorn sheep. The sale opened a shade under last week’s values, and was fairly even throughout, medium classes being easier by Is to 2s a head. Quotations: Prime heavy woolly wethers, to 555; prime, 48s 6d to 535; medium, 46s to 47s Gd; light, from 365; prime shorn wethers, 42s 6d to 465; medium, 34s to 37s 6d; light, from 28s; prime woolly ewes (heavy), to 50s; prime, 42s 6d to 45s 6d; medium, 37s 6d to 39s 6d; light, from 275; prime shorn ewes, 34s 6d to 37s 6d; medium, 27s to 295; light, from 21s. Spring Lambs.—The yarding totalled 500. Although there were a number of pens of good quality, there was a big percentage of light and unfinished sorts. Owing to the over-supply to the trade, there was a sharp drop in values. On the average the easing was from 7s to 8s a head, and in some cases a further drop was shown. Best quality lambs realised up to 40s; prime, 35s to 38s; medium, 29s to 325; and light, from 235.

Pigs.—The entry was again a small one, numbering only 50 head. The market remained on the same level as last week. Quotations: Extra prime baconers, to £6 7s; prime, £5 2s to £5 15s; medium, £4 7s to £4 15s; light, from £4 ss. The yarding of store pigs was again a small one, with prices showing a decided improvement on last week’s. Good store pigs made up to 40s; slips, 27s 6d to 355; best weaners, 26s to 28s 6d; and ordinary classes, 17s upwards. Store Cattle. was a poor display in the store cattle pens, the quality generally being poor. Little interest was taken in the sale, and most of the lots were passed. One pen of steers, sold privately after the auction, realised £9. In the vealer section there was also a limited number, and prices for these remained on the same level as last week. Best runners realised up to £ll 17s 6d, good quality vealers £7 10s to £9. and medium £4 17s 6d to £6. Dairy Cattle.—The entry was a poor one, only about 20 being offered. There was a poor attendance of buyers, with no keenness in the market. Best cows realised from £7 15s to £8 17s, while good quality heifers realised up to £9
