RICCARTON RACE TRIALS

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. -16. There was a large crowd at Riccarton this morning when a series of trials were held, carried out by the local Owners and Trainers’ Association, for the benefit of horses engaged at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Four separate trials were arranged, but with a total ot 97 entries it was found necessary to run three in divisions, making seven events in all. The trials were run under race conditions, with colours up and with Mr P D. McNab at the starting barrier, while Mr J. S. Shaw was clerk of the course. , _ , Hughsotis, Burberry, and Gunga Din set the pace in the first division of the nine-furlong trial. Kevin and Palfrey moved up when the straight was reached, Kevin winning narrowly from Gunga Din. with Burberry and Palfrey close up. The first five furlongs took lrnin 3 3-ssec and the full journey lmin 55 4-ssec. In the second division Gamble led Good Scout, Botany, Rawhamai, and Scottish Dale to the straight, where Gamble ran wide. Good Scout beat Botany by a length, with Scottish Dale next, then Foxhaven, finishing fast. The time was lmin 55 2-ssec, the first five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec.

Lord Roland was near the front all the way in the first division of the two-year-olds, and won decisively from Periwig, who finished well. Then came the Caterpillar gelding (always -prominent) and Falconbridge (finishing on). Pensacola showed up in the straight. Beau Cheval faded out. Time, lmin 2 l-ssec. Piccolo and Simon Tor were prominent from the start of the second division. Piccolo won by a length, with the places filled by Evidence and Perjure, who headed Simon Tor in the run home. In the first division of the hack trial Dash o’ Dink beat St. Nattar narrowly, While Banco finished fast for third, just beating In Chancery. Time, lmin Msec. Scottish Lad showed up early in the second division. Paper Lily and Contemptuous led Irish Note after three furlongs, with Justitia moving up. Contemptuous faded out and Paper Lily won from Irish Note, with Sunny Sal finishing fast to cut Justitia out of third place. Time, lmin 15sec. Lord Advocate and John Gay were in front all the way in the open sprint, the former winning by a head, with Tutere always handy, finishing strongly a head away. This was the most interesting gallop of the morning, each of the three Stewards’ candidates pleasing his friends. Time, lmin 12 l-ssec.
