TOURIST TRAFFIC

SOUTH ISLAND ATTRACTIONS REPRESENTATIONS TO GOVERNMENT The need for greater publicity for the tourist attractions or the South Island is emphasised in remits which will be submitted to the conference of South Island chambers of commerce at Dunedin on November 3 and 4. A remit will be discussed calling upon the South Island chambers, to bring pressure on the Government to ensure that the tourist resorts in this island are given equal publicity with those of the North Island, and that for this purpose a separate executive officer should be appointed to look after South Island attractions. A proposal will also be considered, requesting the Government to make coloured films of the scenic attractions of the South Island for exhibition abroad.

A remitylealing with, the Haast Pass suggests that, as a round trip from the north of the South Island down the West Coast and through the Southern Lakes and Sounds district, with a return along the east coast, will offer an outstanding attraction which should materially increase the South Island’s tourist traffic, the Government be urged to complete the Haast Pass road and Milford Sound road as soon as possible. It was also proposed that the Government should be asked to provide up-to-date hotels and hostels at key points in the South Island, to be run on similar lines to the Hermitage, the Chateau, and Waitomo.
