SOCIAL SECURITY

BETTER THAN.BEVERIDGE PLAN Mr F. Jones, the Labour candidate for Dunedin South, said last night that when in England he had been asked whether New Zealand’s Social Security scheme was better than that proposed for Great Britain by Sir William Beveridge. Sir William had stated that his scheme was similar to that in New Zealand.

Mr Jones had replied that the New Zealand scheme was a better one than that proposed by Sir William Beveridge for two reasons. One was that Sir William’s scheme did not go as far as New Zealand’s and, secondly, that the New Zealand scheme was in operation, but the British scheme had yet to be established. “I wonder if the British scheme will be established in its entirety,” ,Mr Jones continued. “ I hope it will be, for the people of Britain deserve it after all the sufferings they have gone through.” .

Mr Jones added that Canada was considering a social security scheme and also the United States.
