HOME ECONOMICS
A large attendance of members of the Home Economics Association was presided over by Mrs Digby Smith in the Home Science Building on Monday night, when Miss H. Thomson, assisted by Miss P Jackson, gave a second talk on the conservation of fabrics, this time based on the prevention and removal of stains. Miss Thomson said that stains were a very common cause of undue wear in fabrics, and their prevention was most desirable. Once they were detected immediate steps should be taken for their removal, first by determining the nature of the stain, and then the nature of the fabric, whether it can be washed, and whether the necessary bleach would have any harmful effects. The speaker then classified the everyday stains of the home into different groups according to their physical and chemical natures, and by the use of many demonstrations showed the best methods of removing different stains from various types of fabrics. Printed instructions for the removal of a long list of stains were distributed and these were received gratefully. Mrs Soper thanked Miss Thomson and Miss Jackson on behalf of all the members present.
