WOMEN’S FRANCHISE

As part of their programme for the cele* brating of the jubilee of the women’s franchise in New Zealand, the societies cooperating have agreed to discuss and advocate further necessary advances in the position of women. The resolutions which have been decided on fall into two main classes—(l) Equal rights of citizenship: That practical recognition be given to the principle of equality of citizenship, politically, economically and socially, as between men and women, (a) Politically: (1) That in all walks of life, opportunities, rights and responsibilities as between the sexes should be similar (women on juries and on all boards and commissions set up by the State to be on the same terms" as men); (2) that the residential qualifications for local body elections be the same in the country as in the town, (b) Economicallv. (1) That all positions and salaries in every trade and profession, whether private or public, should be open equally to women as to men, and that all promotions be made on a QuahhcaJ* 01 } basis without regard to sex; (2) That ‘motherhood be endowed, (c) Socially. That a woman should have the same right as a man to retain or change her nationall(2)‘ Education: (a) That the education system be revised so that it is dominated no longer, by materialistic ideas in a competitive society; but becomes the dynamic of a co-operative society, planned to foster intelligent gooWvill; (b) that the Education Vote be at all times so generous that it may be possible for the best and modern ideas on education —from nursery school to university—to be put into practice; (c) that the school-leaving age be raised to 16, and the law be rigorously enforced at all times.
