MILTON FOOTPATHS

Sir —Allow me to protest regarding the disgraceful condition of the footpath in George street, Milton, which, after a shower of rain, resolves itself into a miniature duckpond. Milton has been a borough controlled by a council since about 1869 or 1870, and some of the ratepayers have lived in George street almost from its inception, paying rates or rents, which, by the way, are nearly the heaviest, if not actually the heaviest, in New Zealand. How much have our borough councillors spent on maintenance in this street in the last 20 years? At a rough guess I would say about £1 per year. All the residents in this street are working men, mostly with families, which include a good many school children The edge of the footpath is overgrown with grass, and this prevents the water from getting into the so-called water-table, which is, and always has been, knee-deep in grass. Also the footpath, where it joins Cross street, is fully one foot lower than the roadway, and consequently gets all the surface water off the road.—l am, etc., Ratepayer. Milton, August 14.
