HOCKEY

CANTERBURY BEATS OTAGO The representative hockey match between Canterbury and Otago, which was played at the Oval on Saturday in fine weather, resulted in a win fcr the visiting team by 4 goals to 3. In spite of the heavy state of the ground, play was fast and the result was in doubt until the end. It was one of the best matches seen in Otago for some years. The Otago forwards combined well and made good use of the opportunities that were given them by the half-back line. The defence was sound, and many fine clearances were made by B. Bedford (half-back), while the goalkeeper, W. Rowntree, also gave a good display. Otago was attacking for the greater part of the first spell, but the half-time score . was I—all. W. Lamb, A. Kilday. and C. Walters played outstanding games for the visiting team, the goals for which were netted by R. Lenney, J. O’Keefe, R. Moir, and A. Kilday. Otago was attacking strongly towards the end of the match, and Canterbury’s gc-alie, H. Barnhill, made a brilliant save. Otago’s points were scored by B. Ryburn, P. Diehart, and J. Bullivant. Women’s Matches

In the women’s senior competition Dunedin secured its first win this season when it defeated University by 3 goals to 2. E. McGregor was the outstanding player for Dunedin, and M. Lindsay and L. Harding played well for University. Although College I defeated Otago by 6 goals to 2, the play was fairly even. Both the Otago defence and attack were sound, but the College forwards proved to be too strong. W. Middleton, V. Weir, B. Graham, and J. Hewitt played excellent games for College, and prominent Otago players were W. Bray and M. Henderson.

Bounty 2 defeated College II 1. Bounty played without a centre-forward, otherwise a bigger, score would probably have resulted. E. Corrigall and D. Tait both played good games. H. Harley secured all the points for Kings, which defeated Momona by 5 goals to 2. This was a very fast and hard game. M. Fisher, M. Eaton, and E. Symon, together with H. Harley, were outstanding players for Kings, as were P. Mitchell. N. Oliver, and N. Smith fcr Momona.
