BANANAS ARRIVE
APPLES RATIONED VEGETABLES IN SHORT SUPPLY A small shipment of bananas came to hand during the week, and was rationed to retailers. The fruit was railed from Auckland to Wellington, and was then brought on by ferry and rail to Dunedin. The extra handling resulted in the v crates in several instances being badly knocked about. Another shipment of oranges is expected shortly. Australian lemons are sold out at the wholesale marts, but the retail trade is at present well supplied. A small quantity only is expected in the next shipment. The shortage of supplies of apples con•tinues, and strict rationing is now in force? Sales are being made to the retail trade only. , , Vegetables continue in short supply. Cabbages are being rationed at the ceiling price of 18s per cwt. Cauliflowers are in short supply, with high prices ruling. Carrots are realising the ceiling price of 15s per cwt, but parsnips aie in over-supply and sales are slow. The ceiling price for parsnips is 16s per cwt., and sales are being made at round about 9s per cwt. Celery and leeks are in short supply, with high prices ruling. Marrows are practically finished for the season. Further supplies of pumpkins are expected • next week from Hawke s Bay. Swedes are in heavy supply, and at present are the cheapest vegetable on the m Anemones, Sol d’Or, and freesias from the North Island are realising high prices. . ~ Wholesale prices are as follows.—
Apples: Delicious, 6s 6d to 11s 3d per case; Granny Smith, 7s to 9s 3d; Sturmers, 5s to 8s 6d; cookers, 5s to 9s, according to count. _,. . . Oranges and lemons: Sold out at the Cole and Winter Nelis pears, 16s per bushel. Poorman oranges, 20s to 25s per case. Bananas: Green, 25s 6d per case. Celery, Is 9d to 2s 4d per bundle. Lettuce. to 4s per dozen. Carrots, 15s per cwt. Cabbages, 8s to 10s 6d per sack. Cauliflowers, 10s to 14s per sack. Pumpkins, lid per lb. Parsnips, Id per lb. Swedes, 2s to 2s 3d per sugar bag. Marrows, to 2d per lb. Brussels sprouts, 5d to 6d Rer lb. Silver beet, 9s per cwt. Leeks, 6d to 9d per bundle. Onions: Canterbury. 20s P er , cental bag.
