GRAIN AND PRODUCE

MARKETS UNCHANGED Odd lines of good milling wheat are still being taken up by local millers, on a basis of 6s 5Jd, f.o.b. This is the value for August deliveries. There is still a substantial quantity of wheat with a high moisture content in the stores or held bv farmers, and this class of wheat will have to be’utilised for poultry purposes. The demand for fowl wheat is quiet. Inquiries are being received for seed wheat, and already lines are going out for spring sowing. Indications point to a good response from growers to the request by the Government to increase the areas to be planted in wheat thi3 season. Flour, Bran, etc. Flour: 200’s, £l3 15s Gd; 100’s, £l4 12s 6d; 50’s, £l4 17s Gd: 25’s, £ls 7s Gd. 6ran, £5 5s per ton of 20001 b. Pollard, £6 15s per ton of 20001 b. No Change in Oats Little interest is being displayed in the oats market, consequent on the paucity of offerings from growers. It is considered that most stocks have been marketed, and consequently the main business :n oats from now on will be in seed lines. a lies of seed oats are not over-plen-and some varieties, such as Algerians, Duns, and black oats, are almost unprocurable. Shortage of Potatoes Supplies of potatoes are not plentiful, and merchants are beginning to wonder where they will be able to secure lines to supplement the stocks for the local trade. It is difficult to obtain supplies from Canterbury, and the position at present appears tb be developing into the acute stage which prevailed towards the end of the season last year. Quiet Market in Seeds The volume of business passing in seeds is limited. There are few inquiries from overseas for exportable lines, and merchants do not anticipate any movement in stocks until the spring sowing commences in the Sbuth Island. Supplies of white clover are plentiful, and the sales made for export are on the light side. This has resulted in merchants not being prepared to operate in this seed, and the market is inclined to ease. The market for Montgomery clover continues quiet, with prices on a lower basis than those of last month. The cocksfoot market is firm, with supplies on the short side, and the same position applies to the market for certified ryegrass of good germination. Some sales of ordinary ryegrass have recently been made for shipment to Canada. Most of the fescue seed available has already been exported, and the short supplies of browntop have resulted in the market for this seed remaining steady. Dogstail values are unchanged.
