COMBAT PLANES

REDUCED OUTPUT IN AMERICA (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 12 It is learned from a high authority, says the Washington correspondent of the Herald-Tribune, that the Roosevelt Administration intends to press for the passage of a compulsory National Service Bill in the autumn session of Congress to replace the patchwork methods of solving the man-power shortage which is now retarding the production of war planes and other weapons. The War Mobilisation Board adviser, Mr B. M. Baruch, estimates that an additional 58,000 aircraft employees are needed every month for 12 months to ensure the projected peak output of 10,000 planes a month in 1944. The New York Sun’s Washington correspondent describes the war-plane lag as a major disaster. He points out that one west coast aircraft manufacturer was seeking the deferment of the military call-up for 50,000 workers and urges the summoning of Congress to advise on laws and practices hindering output.
