TRAVEL CLUB
Impressions Of Cairo and its environ* were given by Lieutenant Alex. McDowell at the Travel Club meeting at the Savoy on Wednesday morning. The speaker sketched the origin of the name,, and .the history of the city, with its 200 mosques, 50 of which were ancient, the ancient citadel, and the Roman aqueduct which supplied it with water from the Nile. He also spoke of the old part of the city, where people still live in great squalor and degradation, the university, and the churches of the different denominations. Language was one of the great difficulties. Arabic was commonly spoken, and also French. English, German, and other tongues. The Value of the club, “ Music for All,” the cultural centre for men. and women of the services, was stressed by Lieutenant McDowell, who said that every evening entertainment of. cultural value, was presented at this club. * ; Guests welcomed by Mrs R.
