GERMAN CAUSE LOST
LEADERS’ CHANGED HOPES
LONDON, Aug. 10. Under the heading “ Germany in Difficulties,” the Swiss newspaper Tribune de Lausanne states: “It seems impossible for Germany to increase her industrial output. All Germans know to-day -that they are no longer fighting for victory. If they continue fighting it is solely to obtain acceptable peace terms from their opponents.” According to a Stockholm report about 4,000,000 have been evacuated from the bombed towns in Western and and North-western Germany. Millions more are waiting to leave. The German press continues'to publish pictures showing German military leaders conferring at Hitler’s headquarters. Many of the pictures bear the caption “ Something is Going to Happen.” The Times correspondent on the German frontier says the obvious purpose of the pictures is to endeavour, as during previous crises, to convince the masses that all of Germany’s leaders are working together harmoniously to overcome the difficulties of the situation. It is rumoured that a new stratosphere bomber is now being built in Germany with a ceiling beyond range of any anti-aircraft guns and any escorting stratosphere fighters. % Admitting that Germany and her allies are on the defensive, the Berlin radio’s military commentator, General Dietmar, said: “We have paid for the phrase, 'Gaining Time,’ with territory and our enemies with blood. This is applicable to both the eastern front and Sicily. If we succeed in protracting matters without offering the enemy the opportunities for dealing decisive blows to deprive us of our conquests, we shall have done our best to prepare the way for the fundamental turning point.”
