SENTENCED FOR THEFT

TWO AMERICAN SEAMEN (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 11. Two members of the crew of an American ship pleaded guilty before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., when they were jointly charged this morning with the theft of 10 gallons of white spirit, valued at £2O.

“ This offence is regarded seriously because white spirit is part of hospital supplies,” said Senior Detective Walsh. “ The spirit, which has a particularly high alcoholic content, .is in great demand at present, especially by illicit traders in liquor, and there is a black market for it.”

Each of the accused was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment, the magistrate ordering that they be placed on board their ship if if. sails before the expiration of that time.
