AN UNUSUAL DISPLAY
The famous chess problem from which Lewis Carroll wrote his book "Alice Through the Looking Glass ” is shown in a special display at the Otago Museum this week. Alice is represented by the white pawn, and the other characters of the book are depicted by the other chess pieces. White is to play and win in 11 moves. The chess pieces are taken from a set of carved ivory figures from China. Carved in intricate detail inside one another, they are each mounted on a series of balls in typical Chinese fashion.
