NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
The monthly meeting of the National Council* of Women was held on Wednesday night last, when Miss Lovell-Smith presided over a large attendance of members. She welcomed Miss Standage, repersenting the Y.W.C.A.. and Mrs Peat, an associate member. . , , The president reported on the celebrations which will take place in Dunedin on September 19 and 20 to mark- the jubilee of the granting of the franchise to women. It is proposed to hold a thanksgiving service on the Sunday afternoon and a conversazione on the Monday night, with two women speakers, a musical programme, and supper. It was noted with satisfaction that railway fares have been reduced for children cf certain ages, and it was decided to congratulate the Minister of Railways on this step. , „ _ ..„ Mrs Leary reported for the Seaclift Sub-committee, which continues to do good work visiting the mental hospitals, and delegates were requested to ask their societies for magazines, sweets, sewing, transfers, started work, and wools and cottons, which may be left at the YWCA. Mrs Cameron spoke of the help given to New Zealand soldiers by the women of Greece, and stressed the fact that garments were urgently needed for these women. It was decided to refer the matter to the Dominion conference of the National Council of Women, to be held in Wellington from September 7 to September 10, when it was hoped to make a Dominion-wide effort for this Sidey Estate housing settlements, the following resolution was carried:—“ That the National Council of Women is of the opinion that the Government should make provision in every housing settlement for a community centre. It urges that provision should be made immediately for an area to be set apart fc-r this purpose in the Sidey Estate housing settlement, to comprise accommodation for a creche, Plunket rooms, kindergarten, library, social hall, and children’s playground. lire meeting concluded with discussions on remits for the Dominion conference, dealing with various matters under the heading of health, education, justice, the kinema and broadcasting, and housing.
