BUILDING OF AIRFIELDS
THE AMERICAN CONTRACTS USE AFTER THE WAR WASHINGTON, (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) July 11. The Truman Investigation Committee has ordered an inquiry into contracts which provide that Americanbuilt military airfields must be handed over to foreign nations six months after the war. Senators J. M. Mead and R. O. Brewster, members of the committee, have been instructed to investigate the contracts during their coming world tour of inspection of United States equipment and forces, which they are making with three other Senators.
Senator Mead said that he and Senator Brewster hope to bring back recommendations which will help the United States Government to reach agreements which will at least permit United States planes after the war to use airfields “built with War Department and lease-lend funds along aerial highways all- over the globe." He added: “If there is anything in leaselend in reverse we certainly should have some concessions which will permit our commercial planes to land on these airfields and use their facilities after the war.”
