PORT CHALMERS

ALL-PURPOSES CARNIVAL A most successful carnival was held in aid of the All Purposes Appeal, the local total for which now stands at £ll7O, the quota for this year being £1484. On Friday the Deputy Mayor, Mr A. L. S. Cassie, opened the carnival at the Garrison Hall, where stalls were conducted by members of the Mothers’ League, Presbyterian Church, Methodist Church, Catholic Church, the Labour Party, the Plunket aids, and the Boys’ Brigade. Games, which were controlled by Mr W. A. Jenkins, of the sports section of the Dunedin-St. Kilda Zone Committee, and kindly lent by the St. Kilda Beach Improvement Society, proved popular and raised a considerable sum of money. Friday’s takings amounted to £193. On Saturday afternoon a parade was held, those taking part including United States servicemen, members cf the Fire Brigade, band, E.F.S., Red Cross, Boys’ Brigade, Sea Scouts, and local school children in 'fancy dress. Mr J. Mathews was marshal, and he was ably assisted by Miss Cable and Miss Simpson, who had control of the children. The main event of the evening's entertainment was the Mock Court, which was most successfully run by members of the Commercial Travellers’ Association, who supplied the judge, Mr E. Griffin, and the clerks of the court. The Marine Band provided music. Mr A. L. S. Cassie, to whose organising ability the carnival owed its success, announced the final total as £493 4s 7d, and expressed his gratitude to all who helped to make the event such a success.
