FINE OF £4OO IMPOSED
Stated by the prosecution to have previously been fined substantial amounts for breaches of the Gaming Act, Raymond Martin Quin, aged 41, was fined £4OO in the City Police Court' on Saturday for bookmaking. Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., was on the Bench. . .. Chief Detective Holmes told the court that so far as could be ascertained the defendant had no other occupation but that of a bookmaker. He was unfit for military service, and he had a fairly extensive business, which was done mainly through agents. He had previously been fined for bookmaking and for allowing his promises to be used as a common gaming house. When his premises were visited that morning it was found that he had already done £55 worth of betting. To the magistrate, Quin said that, with the curtailment of racing, there was not much betting these days. “What! And you can take over £SO before breakfast? ” his Worship asked. “I cannot appreciate tnat, Judged by the totalisator returns, there is any amount of betting, and one would think that this money would be deflected into other channels.”
