TROTTING NOTES
By Sentinel
The light harness racing season of 194843 is close to its exit from the calendar, and the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Monday will terminate what can be claimed as a particularly successful year’s span of sport. It (has been marked by progressive programmes, encouraging the breeding of the best obtainable, for the stud, with the result that to-day the quality of the light harness horse is on a generally higher plane than it- has previously attained. . That great progress , has been made is evident by the times recorded on the . track and also by the general improvement in the conformation and quality of the best performers seen in action during the past few years, New Zealand is at present remarkably close to American records in spite of the handicaps of much smaller tracks thap the mile circuits on which the champions qf the United States have set a main beyond our reach until similar conditions enable a horse to attain and hold its full flight of speed over a mile.
